Education Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership

The Education Specialist Degree (Ed.S.) is an advanced degree of 30 credit hours beyond a Master’s Degree.   The educational specialist degree is designed for professional educators involved in education and schooling who already hold leadership roles in education or those who aspire to leadership positions.  There are two (2) entry options and two (2) different plans of study depending on the candidate’s previous educational status and licensure:

  1. Those already holding a Master’s Degree in an area of Educational studies other than School Administration and are seeking Mississippi School Principal Administration with licensure as advanced work towards earning a 33 hour Ed.S. which will become hours towards the Ed.D.
  2. Those already holding a Master’s Degree in School Leadership and Supervision with a Mississippi State Administration License and are now seeking an advance 33 hour Ed.S. degree to become hours towards the Ed.D.

Admission Information

Applicants will be evaluated to determine those who possess the personal qualities and dispositions, academic acumen, and professional experiences to suggest a compelling potential for success as doctoral candidate and to advance as educational leaders. The following information will be required to complete an applicant’s Application Portfolio:

  • Have an earned master’s degree in education or related field, with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Submission of an essay describing the applicant’s background, career goals, and reasons for applying to the program. The applicant should include a 3-5 page overview of their experiences in teaching, administrative duties, or other employment opportunities related to involvement in PK-12 education.
  • Submission of three professional letters of recommendation.
  • Submission of documentation of a minimum of three years’ experience in a PK-12 education context.
  • Submission of Millers Analogy Test scores or Graduate Record examination scores (less than five years old).
  • Submission of two artifacts that clearly demonstrate their leadership potential within his/her most current position.
  • Completed and signed copy of the Candidate Request Form for Intern Mentoring Supervisor.
  • Copy of their current Teaching Certificate.
